Castelveccana suits families and walkers after a house with a garden on Lake Maggiore's Lombard shore, with a station at Caldè. Homes are spread across its scattered hamlets, many with an open fire but few with air conditioning, and only some have a pool, so it is better in spring and autumn than in a July heatwave.
Castelveccana is a comune of about 2,000 people on the Lombard shore of Lake Maggiore, about 20 km north-west of Varese. It is a scatter of fifteen hamlets rather than one town, with names such as Caldè, Nasca, Sarigo, Ronchiano and San Michele, and the comune centre stands at about 260 metres. At Caldè, the remains of the Rocca, a fortress recorded from the 10th century and wrecked by Swiss troops in 1513, sit in a park with restored kilns, a small chapel and a tower built as a memorial to the war dead. Caldè also has the station, on the line from Luino to Milan. Our homes lie within a short distance of each other among these hamlets. Gardens are the norm, an open fire is common, a pool is the exception, and most sleep four to six.
The neighbouring town, with the car ferry to Intra and a cable car, opened in 1963, up the Sasso del Ferro in about 15 minutes.
Hermitage church at Leggiuno perched on a cliff over the lake, with frescoes from the 14th to 19th centuries and views to Stresa.
Town further up the railway beyond Porto Valtravaglia, with a Wednesday market said to be one of Europe's largest; its market rights date from 1541.
Milan Malpensa is about 46 km away, roughly 50 minutes by car. By rail, change at Gallarate for Caldè station; allow about an hour and a half. The homes are spread among scattered hamlets, so a car is close to essential.
The mountains around Lake Maggiore shelter it from cold northern winds, which helps in spring and autumn. Homes here lean the same way: many have an open fire and few have air conditioning, so a hot spell in July or August is harder going than a mild October. Luino's Wednesday market gives any week a fixed outing.
Yes. The comune lies on the Lombard shore, about 20 km north-west of Varese, bordering Laveno-Mombello and Porto Valtravaglia. It is a scatter of hamlets, with Caldè home to the railway station and the old fortress.
You can. Caldè station is on the Luino to Milan line, with Trenord trains to Milano Porta Garibaldi and TiLo trains towards Gallarate. From Malpensa airport, change at Gallarate; the journey takes about an hour and a half.
Luino's Wednesday market is the one to know. It is said to be one of the largest of its kind in Europe, the town's market rights go back to 1541, and Luino is on the same railway line as Caldè.
Stay in Laveno if you want to walk to the car ferry for Intra and the cable car up the Sasso del Ferro. Castelveccana, next door, is a looser scatter of hamlets where our homes mostly come with a garden.
It is what survives of a fortress at Caldè, recorded from the 10th century and destroyed by Swiss troops in 1513. Today it is a park with sections of wall, restored kilns, a chapel and a tower honouring the war dead.
