Moniga del Garda is a small wine town on Lake Garda's southwest side, suited to couples wanting a private pool near Verona airport. Homes are compact and the village is quiet.
Moniga del Garda lies on the southwest side of Lake Garda, in the hills between Desenzano and Salò, at about 125 m above sea level. It is a small town with a castle, and the remains of a pile-dwelling village show people lived here in the Early Bronze Age. The local wine is Chiaretto, a light cherry-coloured rosé developed here in 1896 by a local man, and the town gives it a fair, Italia in Rosa, each June. The homes are grouped in one tight area around the town, and every one has a private pool. About half have a garden. They are small, sized for two to six, so this is not a big-group base. For a boat trip, a local bus runs to Salò, where ferries cross to Garda.
A neighbouring town whose castle, the oldest in the Valtenesi, sits on cliffs hanging over the southern basin of Lake Garda.
The largest island on the lake, with a Venetian neo-Gothic villa and formal gardens, open to visitors on guided tours since 2002.
Reached by local bus from Moniga, and the place to pick up the ferry across to Garda.
About 45 minutes by car from Moniga, or reached by bus to Salò and a ferry.
Verona airport is about 40 minutes away by car. By public transport, a bus to Verona Porta Nuova, a train to Desenzano and a local bus take under two hours. A car is useful for the hill roads and the lake.
June brings the Italia in Rosa wine fair, the town's yearly event for its Chiaretto rosé. In summer a private pool earns its keep, and every home here has one. Outside the main season the village is quiet, so check restaurant opening times and bus and ferry timetables before you travel.
