About Lignano Sabbiadoro

Lignano sits on a low peninsula between the Marano lagoon and the Tagliamento river. It grew as a resort rather than from an old village: the first permanent residents arrived in 1931, once the marshes were drained, and the Sabbiadoro name (golden sand) was added in 1935 as a promotional touch. The town splits into three zones. Sabbiadoro itself holds the shops and restaurants, Lignano Pineta has gardens and lanes for strolling, and Lignano Riviera runs along the waterfront under coastal pines. The homes here sit within a couple of kilometres of each other, so one base covers all three. For evenings, the Terrazza a Mare, opened in 1972, has a bar and shops, and the marina has more than 5,000 berths. Out of season, expect a resort built around summer rather than a town with a life of its own.

Getting to Lignano Sabbiadoro

When to go to Lignano Sabbiadoro

Lignano is described as one of the main summer resorts of northern Italy, so the high summer weeks are the busy ones and the town is geared to them. Outside high summer the beach season thins out, and some seasonal businesses may be shut, so check before booking a shoulder-season week. Every home here has air conditioning, which matters most in the hottest weeks.
