Raveo suits couples and walkers who want one of the smallest villages in Carnia, in a sunny basin among the Carnic Alps. The homes are small, for two to four, with no pools. The catch is access: you arrive by motorway and then the SS 52, and a car is essential.
Raveo is one of the smallest villages in Carnia, set in a green basin on the slopes of Monte Sorantri, on the right bank of the Degano stream in Val Degano. Mountains, low hills and the Degano and Chiarsò streams surround it. The 1976 earthquake changed its look, but several old buildings survived, including Casa di Miàn and Casa del Medìli, with its corner balcony and a stone portal dated 1766. The village sits inside the Colline Carniche park, crossed by a network of nature and history paths. The homes are together in the village.
Waterfall set in cracks in the mountain near Raveo, counted among the most beautiful in Carnia.
Plateau at 900 metres, one of the old hay meadows on the path past the sanctuary, with rustic Carnic-style houses, some restored and some abandoned.
The 896-metre mountain on whose slopes the village sits, where excavations revealed a Celtic village.
Raveo is reached by road. Coming from the Venice and Trieste motorway, take the A23 towards Udine and Tarvisio, leave at the Carnia-Tolmezzo exit and follow the SS 52 to Tolmezzo. The nearest stations are on the Udine to Tarvisio line, including Carnia, so a car is needed.
Biscuits, mainly. The Esse, named for its shape, is the typical Raveo biscuit, and local shops also sell berry syrups and liqueurs, savòrs seasoning and apple vinegar.
On the second Sunday of December. Sapori di Carnia is a food show and market, and it is the village's big food and wine event of the year.
Plenty. An old cobbled path runs past the Sanctuary of the Madonna, built in 1619, towards the hay meadows of Valdie, Luvieis and Pani, and the Colline Carniche park has its own network of nature and history paths.
For a quiet stay, yes. The village sits in Val Degano and the Pievi della Carnia, an itinerary of ten ancient parish churches, makes a good theme for days out.
