Cortona suits villa stays in the countryside around an Etruscan hill town, with Lake Trasimeno about 20 km away. Most homes have a pool and a garden, but they are spread across the hills and a car is needed.
Cortona is a small hill town in the Valdichiana, with Etruscan walls and a cathedral built in 1456. From Piazza Garibaldi you can see Lake Trasimeno in the distance. Our homes are not in the town itself but scattered across the countryside around it, over roughly eleven kilometres. Most have a pool and a garden, nearly all have a fireplace, and a good number sleep eight or more, so this is group and family territory. In town, the Diocesan Museum holds Beato Angelico's Annunciation and Signorelli's Deposition, and the MAEC museum has the Tabula Cortonensis, an Etruscan text. The narrow streets climb steeply. Camucia, about 3 km below, has the nearest station, and out of season the countryside is quiet and the town small.
About 20 km away, with three islands including Isola Maggiore, the only inhabited one.
About 40 minutes from Cortona, with Piero della Francesca's frescoes of the True Cross in the church of San Francesco.
About 40 minutes via the Crete Senesi, with the Piazza del Campo and the cathedral.
A hill town known for underground wine cellars and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
A smaller town of Etruscan origins with museums, and the start of a Via Romea walk to Cortona.
Perugia Airport is about 47 minutes by car from Cortona; by public transport it means a bus and a train, roughly two hours. Camucia-Cortona and Terontola-Cortona stations sit on the Florence to Rome line, with direct trains from Florence and Rome. Homes are scattered, so hire a car.
Summer is the main events season: Cortonantiquaria, one of Italy's longest-running antiques fairs, returns every August and September, and the Cortona On The Move photography festival shows from mid-July. The lake is warm enough for swimming from May to September. Out of season the town is much quieter. The steep streets are a hard climb in midsummer heat.
About 20 km. You can see the lake from Piazza Garibaldi in Cortona, and Passignano port runs ferryboats on the lake. The water is warm enough for swimming from May to September.

Yes, via the Camucia-Cortona or Terontola-Cortona stations, both on the Florence to Rome line. Direct trains run from Florence, Rome and Foligno. Camucia is about 3 km from the town.
Yes, for a small town. The Diocesan Museum has Beato Angelico's Annunciation and Signorelli's Deposition, and the MAEC holds a 4th century BC Etruscan bronze chandelier and the Tabula Cortonensis.
