Lucignano suits large families and groups who want a big house with a private pool near a walled hill town in the Valdichiana. Most homes sleep eight or more and sit in the countryside around the town, so you will drive for most things, dinner included.
Lucignano is a small walled town of about 3,500 people at around 400 m, 25 km south-west of Arezzo. Its streets form an ellipse of concentric rings, an example of medieval town planning, inside walls the Sienese built in 1371. Inside are the Collegiata di San Michele Arcangelo, the church of San Francesco with its Triumph of Death fresco, and the town museum holding the Tree of Gold, a gilded reliquary about 2.6 m tall. Just outside stand the ruins of a Medici castle and the sanctuary of the Madonna della Querce, attributed to Vasari. The homes sit in the countryside around the town, nearly all large, with a pool and a garden.

Perugia is the nearest airport, and Florence is the other option, about an hour away by car; by public transport, take the train to Arezzo and the line 138 bus to Lucignano, around three hours in all. With the homes in the countryside, a car is essential.
The Maggiolata fills Lucignano with flower-decked floats on the last two Sundays of May. Every Thursday in July and August a themed market of local products takes over the historic centre, and the Ceppo fair falls on the Sunday before Christmas.

Also called the Tree of Gold or Tree of Life, it is a gilded reliquary about 2.6 m tall in the town museum. Legend says lovers who pledge themselves before it have good luck, and the Segni d'Amore event centres on it each 14 February.
In summer there is: every Thursday in July and August, stalls of local products and hobby crafts fill the historic centre, with a different theme each week.
