Archangelos suits pool-villa stays on east Rhodes, in a town of potters and olive growers about 30 km south of Rhodes town. The town sits at about 160 m rather than on the shore, so the beaches and Lindos are drives rather than walks.
Archangelos is a town on the east side of Rhodes, with 5,384 residents at the 2011 census, set at about 160 m rather than on the shore. Settlements near the coast were abandoned after the 7th century because of pirate raids, and people moved inland. Pottery has always been a major trade here, alongside tourism, stockbreeding, olive oil and citrus. On a hill near the town are the ruins of a fortress the Knights Hospitaller built after 1453, known as the castle of Saint John. The homes are scattered across the surrounding countryside, so think of the address as around Archangelos. Most have a private pool and a garden. The east coast has almost continuous sandy beaches with calm water, while the west is stonier and rougher. Rhodes has mild winters, and most rain falls between November and January.
Whitewashed village built in tiers below its acropolis and the Temple of Athena Lindia, with beaches equipped for water sports and seafood tavernas.
Walled medieval city and World Heritage Site with the Palace of the Grand Masters, about 30 km north of Archangelos.
Laid-back resort village on the east coast with two hotel-lined beaches and a road lined on both sides with eucalyptus trees.
Cape at the southern end of Rhodes, joined to the island by a tombolo in summer and known for windsurfing and kitesurfing. About 92 km from Rhodes town.
Rhodes Diagoras airport is on the west side of the island, about 14 km south-west of Rhodes city, with seasonal flights from Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton and Stansted. Archangelos is about 30 km south of Rhodes town, so hire a car. Island buses run, but they are often full and often late.
Summers are hot and very dry, with almost no rain from June to August, and the sea is warmest in August. Rhodes is the most visited destination in Greece after Crete, and in summer the number of vehicles more than doubles, with limited parking around Rhodes Old Town. Most rain falls between November and January. All the London routes to the island are seasonal, so winter access is thinner.
Not on the shore. The town stands at about 160 m, because people abandoned the coast after the 7th century to escape pirate raids and settled inland. The sandy east coast beaches are a drive away.
Pottery, first of all. It has always been one of the main occupations, and the town also lives from tourism, olive oil, citrus and stockbreeding. Ruins of a Hospitaller castle, built after 1453, stand on a nearby hill.
As a drive, yes. Lindos is about 50 km from Rhodes town by the bus route, against about 30 km for Archangelos, and its acropolis and beaches make an easy day out by car from here.
Usually. Rhodes' east side has almost continuous sandy beaches with calm water, while the western beaches are mostly stony and the sea rougher. Wind on the island mostly comes from the west.
Most do, and most have a garden. The homes are mainly houses for around five people with three bedrooms, with a few sleeping a dozen or more. Nearly all have air conditioning.
