Mavrovouni is a village of about 500 people, 2 km south of Gytheio on the Mani peninsula, above a sandy beach more than 4 km long. Homes are small, mostly for two, and nearly all are air-conditioned. Summer afternoons are windy, and turtles nest on the beach.
Mavrovouni takes its name, 'black mountain', from the dark rock of the steep hill it stands on, about 90 metres above the sea. Olive oil, fishing and tourism support the village. Below it the beach has organised sections and quieter, undeveloped stretches, and it suits windsurfing. Loggerhead turtles come ashore to nest on it each year, and nests are roped off. Gytheio, 2 km north, is the historic port of the Mani. Mycenaean rock-cut graves lie on the slopes of the village hill, and the Goulades castle was built on the hilltop in 1782. The homes are all in one spot.
