Kissamos Kriti suits groups wanting a private pool in western Crete, with Balos and Falasarna in reach. It is a working port town, and Chania is under an hour away, so you need a car.
Kissamos, also called Kastelli after its Venetian castle, is a harbour town for fishing boats in western Crete, with a regular ferry from the Peloponnese via Kythira. The town museum occupies a former Venetian governor's palace and shows Roman mosaics from the ancient city of Cisamus. Homes are grouped around the town and its surroundings. Most have a private pool, a garden and air conditioning, and they are large: the typical home sleeps seven, and many sleep eight or more. Pick the home by its distance from the town centre, since they are spread over several kilometres. Falasarna's long sandy beaches lie at the west end of Crete, and the Gramvousa peninsula is part of the same municipal unit.
Long sandy beaches at the west end of Crete, with an ancient harbour and an acropolis on a cape.
Remote lagoon reached by boat or by car, often combined with Gramvousa on boat trips.
Peninsula and islets in the north-west, within the Kissamos municipal unit.
Village in the Kissamos municipal unit; ancient Polyrrhenia used Falasarna as its port.
Chania Airport is about 51 km away, roughly 50 minutes by car, and buses from Chania run roughly hourly from early morning to the evening. Without a car, you rely on those buses. Homes are in the surrounding area, so hire a car for Falasarna and Balos.
The beaches are the summer draw, and Balos is remote enough that you should check conditions and boat-trip timetables before an off-season visit. The ferry via Kythira also runs to a timetable worth checking ahead. Nearly all homes have air conditioning, which helps in the hottest weeks, and the pool will be the centre of the stay.
Balos is a common trip from Kissamos. It can be reached by boat or by car, and boat trips often combine it with Gramvousa. Access is remote, so check conditions before you set out.
Falasarna has long sandy beaches. It also has an ancient site with an acropolis on a cape about 90 metres above the harbour, so a visit can combine swimming with history.
Less than an hour's drive on the national road, and buses leave Chania roughly every hour. From Chania Airport, Kissamos is about 51 km, around 50 minutes by car.
