About Georgioupoli
Georgioupoli is the largest village in its municipal unit, at the head of Almiros Bay, once a small fishing settlement and named after Prince George of Greece. The river Almiros forms a small harbour for fishing and tourist boats, and Kalyvaki beach lies across it. Cape Drapano and a rocky shore run to the north. An avenue of eucalyptus trees leads in from the old road to Vrisses, and Lake Kournas is within reach on foot, by bicycle or by the tourist train. Most homes have a private pool, a garden and air conditioning, and they are scattered around the village rather than in one cluster. Some tourist towns on Crete virtually close down in winter, so check what will be open before an off-season stay.
Is Georgioupoli right for you?
- Best for
- Groups and families wanting a private-pool villa and a long beach
- Not for you if
- You plan to go without a car, as homes are scattered around the area and sights are far apart.

When to go to Georgioupoli

What is Lake Kournas near Georgioupoli?
Crete's only freshwater lake, with a perimeter of 3.5 km and about 47 km from Chania. Pedalo hire and tavernas line part of the shore, and you can reach it from Georgioupoli on foot, by bicycle or by tourist train.
