Weißenstadt suits walkers and lake holidays in the Fichtelgebirge, with a 3.8 km path circling the Weißenstädter See. The homes here are small, mostly for around four guests, and none has a pool. The nearest old town is Wunsiedel.
Weißenstadt, now officially Bad Weißenstadt, is a small town of about three thousand people in Upper Franconia. It stands at 630 metres in the Ohře valley, between the Waldstein and Rudolfstein hills, on the shore of the Weißenstädter See. This reservoir covers roughly 48 hectares on the western edge of town, and an asphalt path of 3.8 km runs all the way round it, passing stone steles carved with poems. Bathing, sailing, boating and beach volleyball all happen on or beside the water, and a radon spa and hotel sits on the south-west shore. The homes sit fairly close together. Evenings are quiet, as you would expect of a town this size. The lake is drawn down each autumn to take winter flood water.
The district town to the south-east, with a Biedermeier town centre rebuilt after an 1834 fire, the Fichtelgebirge museum and a station nearby on the Hof to Regensburg line.
A rock labyrinth about 3 km south of Wunsiedel's centre, with paths through narrow gaps and up steep steps. Allow two to three hours.
A protected rock outcrop near the Luisenburg, 869 metres high, with views over the Fichtelgebirge, Bohemia and the Upper Palatinate.
A 939 metre summit with the Kösseinehaus, a small hostel, at the top.
Nuremberg airport lies about 120 km south of Wunsiedel by the A9 and B470. The nearest station for Wunsiedel is Wunsiedel-Holenbrunn, about 3 km out, on the Hof to Regensburg line. A car is the practical choice for the lake and the trailheads.
Lake activities such as bathing, sailing and boating belong to the warmer months, when the path round the Weißenstädter See is easiest to enjoy. The lake is drawn down each autumn to absorb winter flood peaks, so the shoreline changes after summer. Before an off-season visit, check opening times for the spa, the Luisenburg and the Wunsiedel museum, which is closed on Mondays.
Yes. Bathing is possible on the Weißenstädter See, which also has sailing, boating and beach volleyball. A 3.8 km asphalt path circles it, and angling needs a permit.
It does. A radon spa and recreation hotel stands on the lake's south-west shore, and the town added Bad to its name in 2025 as Bavaria's youngest spa town.
No. About three thousand people live here, at 630 metres in the Fichtel Mountains, so expect a quiet place rather than a resort.
Choose Weißenstadt for the lake and the shoreline path. Wunsiedel has the rebuilt town centre, the Fichtelgebirge museum and the railway station, and the Luisenburg rocks lie just south of it.
Not really. They are mostly for around four guests, none sleeps more than six, and none has a pool, so couples and small families fit best.
