Elbersreuth suits large family groups who want a big house in a Frankenwald hamlet, 2.5 km from Presseck and its winter ski trails. Most homes here sleep eight or more and most have gardens. Rail links in the area are poor and snow often lasts into spring, so you need a car.
Elbersreuth is a hamlet of the market town of Presseck, in the Kulmbach district of Upper Franconia. It sits on a south-west-facing slope in a saddle of the Elbersreuther Höhe, a 626 m ridge, in a clearing above a steep drop north into the valley of the Wilde Rodach. One municipal road leads in, off the state road. About a hundred people lived here in 1970, and the moated castle of the Wildenstein family near the centre had already fallen into ruin by the 18th century. The homes are grouped together in the village. Summers are cooler than in the lowlands and snow often lasts into spring.
Market town 2.5 km south, on high ground at 642 m, with a 20 m lookout tower on the Pressecker Knock at its eastern edge.
At 795 m the highest summit in the Frankenwald, with cross-country loops of 6, 8 and 15 km starting from Döbra in winter.
Gorge near the town of Stadtsteinach, another destination for a day out in the eastern Frankenwald.
Fly to Nuremberg, the nearest international airport, and hire a car. Rail links in this part of the Frankenwald are poor. At weekends and on public holidays from May to October, the Frankenwald mobil network helps with linear walks.
The warmer months suit walking and mountain biking on the marked Frankenwald trails. Winter usually brings plenty of snow, with cross-country trails groomed at Presseck and loops on the Döbraberg, and the snow often lasts into spring. Fewer country inns open than before, so check hours before planning a meal out.
Yes, and it is what the homes here do best. Most sleep eight or more, the biggest well into double figures, and most have gardens. Check each listing for sauna and fireplace.
On a small scale, and mainly cross-country. Presseck grooms trails in winter, and the Döbraberg, the highest summit in the Frankenwald, has loops of 6, 8 and 15 km.
Very. The eastern Frankenwald has 32 marked Frankenwald-Steigla walks of 5 to 18 km each, the Fränkischer Marienweg runs through Presseck, and the valley of the Wilde Rodach drops away just north of the village.
Harsher than lowland Franconia. Summers are cooler, snow can arrive on the high ground in autumn while the Main valley is still getting rain, and it often lingers into spring, so pack layers outside high summer.
