Berlin suits city stays in a whole home, with Museum Island, the Wall memorial and lakes such as Wannsee and Müggelsee inside the city. Berlin is a state in its own right, not part of Brandenburg, and our homes are spread across the city, so check the transport link for each address.
Berlin is Germany's capital and also one of its 16 states, surrounded by Brandenburg. About a third of the city is parks, forest, canals and lakes. Our homes are spread across the whole city rather than clustered in one district, so the address matters more than the town name. Most are small, sleeping around three, though a minority take large groups. Museum Island, on the Spree, holds five museums and has UNESCO status, while the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Straße keeps a complete preserved section. After dark there are clubs, bars and late-opening corner shops, especially in Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain. Winters are cold and summers warm.
Five museums on an island in the Spree, a UNESCO site; the Berlin Cathedral there can be climbed for a view of the city.
On Bernauer Straße, with a complete preserved section; the East Side Gallery is a long painted stretch beside the Spree in Friedrichshain.
Lake in the south-west with the popular Strandbad Wannsee, reached by S1 or S7 to Nikolassee, plus a ferry across the water.
The largest lake in Berlin, in the south-east of the city and a well-used swimming spot.
Fly into Berlin Brandenburg airport. The S9 S-Bahn to Alexanderplatz takes around 45 minutes and runs about every 20 minutes, while a taxi or car takes around 25 minutes. You do not need a car in the city, as the S-Bahn and U-Bahn cover most journeys.
Summers are warm and the lakes are the draw. Winters are cold, and when snow falls it rarely lies for more than a few days. Berlin is quite windy, so a windproof jacket helps in spring and autumn. On weeknights the U-Bahn and S-Bahn stop from about 1am to 4.30am, with night buses filling in, while most lines run all night from Friday to Sunday.
No. Berlin is a city-state and one of Germany's 16 states, entirely surrounded by Brandenburg. Our Berlin homes are spread across the city itself, so you are staying in Berlin, not in the Brandenburg countryside.
Strandbad Wannsee in the south-west is a popular lake beach, reached by S1 or S7 to Nikolassee. Müggelsee, the city's largest lake, is a well-used swimming spot in the south-east.
They are spread from the centre out towards the edges rather than gathered in one district. Check each home's map position and nearest S-Bahn or U-Bahn station before you book.
Yes for museums and evenings out, less so for time outdoors. Winters are cold and snow rarely lies for long, but Museum Island and the Wall sites suit a cold day.
Quite. It is windier than much of southern Germany, so pack a wind-stopping jacket, especially in spring and autumn.
