Contis-Plage suits surfers and families who want a small Atlantic resort in the Landes pines, with a spiral-painted lighthouse. Homes sleep around six and none list a pool. They are spread inland around Saint-Julien-en-Born too, so some stays mean driving to the sea.
Contis is a small seaside resort belonging to the commune of Saint-Julien-en-Born, on a strip of dunes no more than 900 metres wide. The Courant de Contis, a little coastal river, runs out to the ocean on the resort's southern side, and the old customs post above its mouth is now the post office and library. Behind the beach, the black-and-white spiral lighthouse stands on a dune among maritime pines and can be climbed. The beach is popular with bathers and surfers alike. Evenings are low-key, though the arthouse cinema is a draw. Inland, Contis les Marais is wilder country of forest, broom and untouched dunes. The homes are scattered between Contis and the inland villages around Saint-Julien-en-Born rather than grouped in the resort.
A 41-metre lighthouse on a dune, about 860 metres from the shore, painted with a double black spiral; 192 steps lead to the top.
A 31 km coastal river that can be paddled by canoe from Saint-Julien-en-Born, getting out near the Pont Rose before the mouth.
The wildest part of Contis, with forest, broom, sandy paths and untouched dunes; its marshes dry out in summer and shelter wildlife in autumn.
Biarritz and Bordeaux airports are both a little over 80 km from Contis. Public transport from either takes nearly two hours or more, with a taxi for the last leg, so hire a car: the homes are spread out between the coast and the inland villages.
In summer a shuttle network run by the local communities links the villages and the beaches, which helps if you would rather leave the car. Autumn is a different visit: the marshes of Contis les Marais, dry in summer, draw wildlife once the season turns.
Yes. The beach at Contis-Plage is very popular with surfers as well as bathers, and the resort sits right on the Atlantic shore of the Landes.
You can. The lighthouse at Contis is open to visitors, with 192 steps to the top of a tower painted in a black-and-white double spiral since 1937.
Saint-Julien-en-Born. Contis is the commune's seaside resort, and the Courant de Contis forms the boundary with Lit-et-Mixe.
No pools are listed for homes here, which mostly sleep around six. Some have a garden or fireplace, so check each listing for what you need.
