Hossegor is a small Landes surf town with a marine lake and four Atlantic beaches, suited to couples and surfers. Homes are compact, sleeping four on average, and very few have a garden or a pool.
Hossegor has about 3,800 residents and takes its name from its marine lake, joined to the sea by a canal first dug in 1869. Four beaches run along 3.5 km of Atlantic shore, and the town's economy revolves around surfing. Offshore lies the Gouf de Capbreton, an underwater canyon thousands of metres deep. La Gravière is a shore-break for experienced surfers, rideable up to 3 or 4 m depending on the sandbanks. Those sandbanks and the rip channels called baïnes move with the currents, so ask locally before swimming. Homes are bunched in a tight area and are small, mostly for two to four, with none sleeping large groups. The French Surf Federation has been based here since 1984, and France's first jai alai venue opened in the town in 1958.
The neighbouring town that shares the World Surf League stop with Hossegor and Seignosse at the end of September.
Neighbouring town whose main tourist beach suits beginners, with medium waves rideable up to about 2 m.
About 20 km to the south; its airport is around 35 minutes from Hossegor by road.
Biarritz airport is about 35 minutes away by road, roughly 23 miles. Public transport means a bus to Bayonne and then another bus or train, taking around two and a half hours, so a taxi or hire car is simpler.
The World Surf League stop shared with Capbreton and Seignosse is usually held at the end of September, depending on the weather. In winter, waves at Les Culs Nus, a naturist beach that also hosts surf contests, can reach about 5 m. The Grand Prix des Landes is played each summer on the Hossegor golf course.
Not at La Gravière, a shore-break for experienced surfers. Beginners do better at neighbouring Seignosse, whose tourist beach suits them, and the main Hossegor beach is hard to surf below a 2 m swell.
Hossegor lies about 20 km north of Biarritz in the Landes. Biarritz airport is around 35 minutes away by road, so it is a practical arrival point.
The World Surf League stop, shared with Capbreton and Seignosse, usually comes at the end of September, depending on the weather. It has been held here since 1987.
Hossegor has the marine lake, the surf federation and four beaches over 3.5 km. Capbreton is the neighbouring town and shares the autumn surf tour stop. Wave quality in both depends on sandbanks that move with the currents.
Hardly any do. Homes here are compact and sleep up to six at most, so they suit couples or a small family rather than a group wanting outdoor space.
