Kuusamo suits skiers and walkers who want a sauna cabin around Ruka, with Oulanka National Park and its Little Bear's Ring trail nearby. Ruka has one of Finland's longest ski seasons. The trade-off is spread: many cabins are well outside the village, so plan on a car.
Kuusamo is a big municipality of forest and 166 lakes on the Russian border, and most of our cabins are around Ruka, the ski resort, rather than the town, with the rest scattered over a wide area. Ruka village is compact: restaurants, ski hire and the gondola base sit within about a ten minute walk of each other, and a free ski bus serves cabins outside the core. The fell has a vertical drop of 201 metres and a season that runs from October to May. Families get the Rosa and Rudolf Family Park with six magic carpets. Kuusamo town, with nearly two thirds of the municipality's 14,800 people, has the airport 6 km away and an open air local history museum on an old farm. The town lies about 60 km south of the Arctic Circle, so there is no true midnight sun or polar night.
The municipal centre, with most of the population and the outdoor Kuusamo Local History Museum, 6 km from the airport.
The 12 km Pieni Karhunkierros loop in Oulanka National Park, past Myllykoski mill, rapids, canyons and three suspension bridges.
A 325 metre stretch of rapids 1 km from the Oulanka visitor centre, on family friendly trails and usually reachable on foot in winter.
Kuusamo airport is about 25 km from Ruka, around 25 minutes by road. airBaltic flies direct from London and Manchester between 11 December 2026 and 29 March 2027, and Finnair connects from Helsinki in under 90 minutes. A car is needed for most cabins and for Oulanka.
Ruka's ski season runs from October to May, with World Cup events in late November and mid-December. Midwinter brings very little direct sun around the solstice. From 14 to 29 June the town has nearly round the clock daylight. Summer is when Oulanka is at its best for hiking, though also at its busiest, and Ruka runs rafting and fishing. Kiutaköngäs is most dramatic during the spring floods.
Less than places further north. Kuusamo town lies about 60 km south of the Arctic Circle, so it has no true polar night, though there is very little direct sunlight around the winter solstice. Ruka's season still runs from October to May.
For most cabins, yes. Our homes are spread widely around Ruka. In Ruka village itself, restaurants, hire shops and the gondola are within about ten minutes on foot, and a free ski bus serves cabins nearby.

Yes, for walking and the water. Oulanka's Karhunkierros trail is about 80 km, the Little Bear's Ring is 12 km, and Ruka offers rafting, paddling, fishing and a bike park. Between 14 and 29 June the nights barely darken.
Ruka has a long October to May season and Oulanka on the doorstep, with a vertical drop of 201 metres. Levi is bigger, with 43 pistes and 325 metres of vertical, and its airport is only 15 km away.
Yes. Ruka's Rosa and Rudolf Family Park has six magic carpets, the ski school takes children from age three, and nearly every cabin has a sauna. The main drawback is distance, since many cabins are a drive from the village.
