Haukipudas suits a summer sauna stay on the Gulf of Bothnia, around 20 minutes' drive from Oulu and its Nallikari beach. Most homes here have their own sauna, but they are small, sleeping around four or five, so larger groups will find little that fits.
Haukipudas was a municipality of its own until it merged with the city of Oulu in 2013, and the old municipality was made up of 16 villages rather than one town. Its shore runs along the Gulf of Bothnia, and the district lies in the delta of the Kiiminkijoki river. Kiviniemi is a fishing village, Martinniemi has a sawmill, and dozens of small islands lie just off the coast. The homes are scattered around the area rather than in one village centre. Evenings are quiet: you heat the sauna, and for restaurants or a night out you head into Oulu. Haukipudas Church, built in 1762, is the main historic building. Most homes have one bedroom and a fireplace as well as a sauna.
The region's city, with a market hall selling everything from reindeer meat to Asian specialities, red granaries on the market square and a reputation for good bicycle routes.
The beach about 4 km from Oulu city centre, good for bathing in summer and an easy trip from Haukipudas.
A fishing village within the old Haukipudas municipality, on the Gulf of Bothnia shore.
Fly to Oulu via Helsinki: Helsinki to Oulu is Finland's most popular domestic flight. From Oulu Airport the drive to Haukipudas takes around 30 minutes. Line 20 buses run from central Oulu every half hour, but a car is far easier for the scattered homes.
Since 1 January 2013, yes. The former municipality merged with Oulu, along with Kiiminki, Oulunsalo and Yli-Ii, and Haukipudas is now one of the city's districts, though its villages keep their own names.
Around 20 minutes by car. Koiviston Auto's line 20 bus also runs from central Oulu every 30 minutes and takes about half an hour, handy for a day in town without driving.
Most do, and most also have a fireplace, so a sauna evening is part of the deal here. Check each listing for the sauna and for wifi, as amenities vary.
Haukipudas for space and a sauna by the sea, Oulu for restaurants and the Nallikari beach on your doorstep. The two are close enough to combine on most days.
