Vordingborg works for families keen on a medieval castle ruin, a market-town centre and direct trains to Copenhagen. Homes are modest, for four to six, and spread over several kilometres around the town, and none has a pool, so this is a base for history and day trips rather than a resort.
Vordingborg is a market town of about 12,000 people on Zealand's south coast, facing the Storstrømmen strait and Falster. In the Middle Ages it was a royal power base under Valdemar Atterdag, and the 26-metre Goose Tower, the largest of the castle's nine main towers, still stands over the ruins. In 1808 it became Denmark's first protected monument. The Danish Castle Centre combines a museum, the ruins and a climb up the tower. The centre has a pedestrian street with cafés and bakeries, and flowers are sold in the square on Fridays. The homes are spread around the town rather than in the centre, and some have a fireplace.
Road 59 runs from Vordingborg to Stege on the island of Møn, and buses from Vordingborg station also go there.
About 37 km away on Falster, across the Storstrøm and Farø bridges, with direct regional trains from Vordingborg.
About 100 km away, with direct regional trains on the South Line and hourly departures from Copenhagen Central.
Copenhagen Airport is about 99 km away, roughly an hour by car. Trains run from Copenhagen Central to Vordingborg about hourly. The homes are spread around the town, so a car makes shopping and day trips easier.
Yes. Direct regional trains on the South Line run from Copenhagen to Vordingborg station, about once an hour, and the same line carries on south to Nykøbing Falster.
The largest of the nine main towers of Valdemar Atterdag's 14th-century castle, 26 metres tall with a golden goose on its spire. It appears on the 20-krone note, and you can climb it as part of a Danish Castle Centre visit.
Reasonably good. Road 59 links the town with Stege on Møn, and buses run from Vordingborg station to Stege, so a day on the island works with or without a car.
In week 28, during the annual festive week. Shops move out onto the pedestrian street with stalls, and in the evenings the castle square fills with music.
