Melby is a small Halsnæs village on the Hundested railway line, a quiet base for families heading to Liseleje's sandy, lifeguarded beach. The village itself has a church and a station but little to do after dark, and the lifeguards leave once the bathing season ends.
Melby is a village of under 800 people midway between Frederiksværk and Hundested, about 60 km north of Copenhagen. Its church began as a Romanesque stone building around 1100, with a red-brick tower and chancel from the 16th century, frescoes inside and the writer Leif Panduro in the churchyard. The homes are spread around the village. Liseleje, a fishing village founded in 1784, turned to tourism in the early 1930s and never had a proper harbour. Liseleje Beach is child-friendly sand, used by kite surfers on windy days. Melby Overdrev, a protected heath, separates the Liseleje and Asserbo plantations. Evenings are very quiet.

Fly to Copenhagen; Melby is about 60 km north of the city. Melby station is on the Hundested line, with trains to Hillerød in just over half an hour and to Frederiksværk in six minutes. A car still helps for shopping, as the homes are spread around the village.
The bathing season at Liseleje runs from 1 June to 15 September, with lifeguards on duty daily and dogs banned from the beach. The beach is open all year, so spring and autumn suit dog walks and heath walks, but expect a very quiet village.
