Grevinge suits a quiet Odsherred stay by a wood burner, with its own station on the Odsherred Line and farm stalls along the lanes. It is a village of a few hundred people rather than a resort, so plan on driving to the beaches and to anywhere with a choice of restaurants.
Grevinge is a small railway village in Odsherred, about 20 km north-west of Holbæk, with a Romanesque church and a stop on the Odsherred Line. The homes sit together around the village rather than spread across the peninsula. This is farming country around the drained Lammefjorden, now used for growing vegetables, and small farms put out signs offering potatoes, carrots, leeks and eggs. Odsherred has long sandy beaches, and almost all of the peninsula's western coast is lined with summer houses. Evenings are quiet, and out of season you will be shopping and eating in larger towns. Most homes have a fireplace or wood burner and sleep around six.
The farmhouse where the painter and poet Sigurd Swane lived for many years, now a museum with its house and grounds open to visitors.
A small forest south of Vig holding seven passage graves, free to wander round on a short outing.
One of Denmark's oldest castles, dating from around 1215, with guided tours on Saturdays and a restaurant serving food rooted in Danish tradition.
Another stop on the same railway line, where a flea market runs every Saturday from Easter to mid-October and on Wednesdays in summer.
From Copenhagen, drive round the fjord through Roskilde and Holbæk, or take the Hundested to Rørvig ferry, which runs only in daytime and stops around 6pm out of season. Lokaltog trains from Holbæk stop at Grevinge, but a car is the practical way to reach the beaches.
Summer is the liveliest time, when the Vig flea market adds a Wednesday to its Saturdays and the farm stalls are full. Spring and autumn are quieter and good for walks to the passage graves in Grevinge Skov. In winter the area is very quiet and a wood burner earns its keep.
Yes. Grevinge has its own station on the Odsherred Line between Holbæk and Nykøbing Sjælland, run by Lokaltog. It helps for a day out, but most visitors still use a car for beaches and shopping.
Both are small villages on the same railway line. Vig has the Saturday flea market, and Grevinge Skov with its passage graves lies just south of it, while Grevinge is the quieter stop.
Very. It has only a few hundred residents, a church and a station, so evenings are calm. For restaurants, look to Dragsholm Castle or the seafood place at the Sjællands Odde harbour.
