Vestervig is a quiet Thy village with the Nordic region's largest village church, and it suits groups wanting space near Agger beach. Beaches and shops need a car, and the wind is strong.
Vestervig is a village of about 550 people in Thisted Municipality, known for its abbey church, the largest village church in Denmark and the whole Nordic region. It has a windmill, a park and a prison and legal history museum. The homes are spread over about four kilometres around the village. They are larger than usual, none sleeping fewer than five, and many have a fireplace or a sauna. Agger beach, inside Thy National Park, carries a Vestervig postcode, and the park's dunes, heath and plantations run up the coast from Agger Tange. Evenings are very quiet, as in most of Thy.
A sandy beach with a little rock, with a café and toilets, suited to children and to kite and wind surfers.
A peninsula between the Limfjord and the North Sea, rich in birds; its meadows are closed from 1 April to 15 July for ground nesters.
The first national park in Denmark proper, 244 sq km of dunes, heath and plantation along the coast from Hanstholm to Agger Tange.
The northern end of the park, where the Second World War fortress is now a museum.
The nearest airports with scheduled flights are Aalborg and Karup; Thisted airport has none. From Aalborg, buses run to Thisted, and Thy line trains reach Hurup Thy via Struer, but public transport connections take time, so plan on a hire car, which you will want for beaches and shops anyway.
Thy is exposed, with strong western winds that bend the trees eastward, so the beach is more for walking and wind sports than for calm paddling. Summer is the main season, with many German visitors in the coastal villages. Outside summer, the dunes and heath are quiet, so check opening times for cafés and museums; the meadows on Agger Tange are closed to visitors from 1 April to 15 July.
Close to it, though the village itself is not on the shore. Agger beach, which carries a Vestervig postcode, is a sandy stretch inside Thy National Park, suitable for children.
Its abbey church, described as the largest village church in the Nordic region and a remnant of Vestervig Monastery, which served as a cathedral until 1130. The village also has a windmill, a park and a prison museum.
Yes. It is sandy with a little rock, has a café and toilets, and is listed as suitable for children. It is also used for kite and wind surfing, so the breeze can be strong.
Yes. Thy is exposed to winds from the north and west, and strong westerlies have bent the trees eastward, so bring a windproof layer even in summer.
Aalborg or Karup, the nearest with scheduled flights, followed by a hire car. Thisted airport has no scheduled traffic, and bus and train links from Aalborg via Thisted or Struer are slow going.
