Blokhus is for families after a wide white-sand beach you can drive onto, with Fårup Sommerland just outside the village. Most homes have a fireplace and a good share sleep eight or more. In summer it is anything but quiet: a village of around 500 residents draws roughly a million visitors a year.
Blokhus is a small seaside village in Jammerbugt Municipality, and its name explains its past: in the early 1600s there were few trees here, so locals built houses from timber shipped over from Norway. Our homes are in and just around the village, so the beach is never far. It is white sand, around 100 metres wide, running from Rødhus in the south to Saltum in the north, and cars are allowed on it. In summer 47 white beach huts go up, lifeguards are on duty, the local cannon guild fires its cannon by the beach centre every night, and concerts play on the outdoor stage on the town square. Behind the village, Blokhus Klitplantage is a big dune plantation with trails and a mountain bike track. Outside the summer season the lifeguards and huts are gone and the sand is left to walkers and the wind.

Another very wide beach of fine white sand in the area around Blokhus; cars may drive onto it and dogs are welcome on a lead.
Garden at Hune, just east of town, with a small café and shop; open on set afternoons from late April to early October.
Recreation area in the dune plantation between Blokhus and Hune, with a natural playground, picnic area, outdoor baking oven and nature trails.
Fly to Aalborg, the only international airport on the North Jutlandic Island. Fårup Sommerland, between Blokhus and Saltum, is around half an hour's drive from the airport, while the bus takes well over two hours with a change. Hire a car: you will want it for supermarkets and for other beaches.
Summer is Blokhus at full volume, with lifeguards on the beach, the white huts out, cannon fire every evening and concerts on the square. It also means a crowded village. Anne Just's Garden opens from late April to early October, and Fårup Sommerland publishes its own season dates, so check them before you book around a visit. In spring and autumn the beach is wide open, and most homes have a fireplace for the evenings.
Yes. Cars are permitted on Blokhus beach, and driving is allowed along the stretch between Rødhus and Løkken. At around 100 metres wide there is room for cars and swimmers, but drive slowly in summer when the sand is full of children.
Very much so in summer. The beach has lifeguards in the season, Fårup Sommerland with its Aquapark is just outside the village, and Gateway Blokhus in the dune plantation has a natural playground and picnic area.
On a lead, they are. Dogs are welcome on Blokhus beach and at Grønhøj Strand as long as they are leashed. For a proper run, the northern part of Blokhus Klitplantage has an off-leash dog area.
It is named after its old houses. In the early 1600s the area had few trees, so timber was brought from Norway and locals built block houses, blokhuse, from it. Before that the village was called Hune Hvarre.
Only a few do. Most Blokhus homes rely instead on a fireplace, and some have a sauna, which earn their keep on cool evenings outside July and August. If a pool matters, filter for one before you shortlist.
