Thisted suits surfers and walkers who want Thy's North Sea coast, with the Klitmøller surf spot close to many of our homes. The town itself is a Limfjord market town about 18 km from Klitmøller, so expect to drive. Few homes here have a pool, while many have a sauna and most a fireplace.
Thisted is a Limfjord town of about 13,500 people, built on three ridges on the northern shore of Thisted Bredning. It has a pedestrian main street, a Gothic church that replaced a Romanesque one around 1490, and the Thisted Bryghus brewery. Most of our homes are not in it. Their middle sits near Klitmøller, about 18 km north-west on the North Sea, and they spread over roughly a dozen kilometres of that coast. Klitmøller is a village of around 1,300 beside Thy National Park, with dunes, heather and two large lakes inland. Its cafés and restaurants are mostly open only in summer. Out of season the coast is for walking and surf, and Thisted, with its pedestrian main street and Gothic church, is the nearest town of any size.
Known as Cold Hawaii for windsurfing and kitesurfing, about 18 km north-west of Thisted and 11 km south-west of Hanstholm.
Opened to the public in 2008 and runs 55 km along the coast from Hanstholm to Agger Tange, with dune heath and small lakes.
At the northern end of the park, with a museum in its Second World War fortress and a lighthouse rebuilt in 1843 that became Denmark's strongest in 1889.
A small tourist resort whose old trade was fishing, and one of three places where boats are still hauled onto the beach; some take fishing tourists out.
Aalborg is the nearest airport with scheduled international flights, about 86 km east of Thisted by road, and Norwegian flies there from London Gatwick. Klitmøller, where most coast homes are, lies another 18 km north-west. Thisted has a station on the line to Struer, but you will want a car for the dunes and beaches.
Summer is when most Klitmøller cafés and restaurants are open, and the village holds a summer festival on the first weekend in June. Wind and waves are the draw for surfers, so conditions matter more than the calendar. Birdwatchers should note that about 60 to 70 percent of the Hanstholm game reserve is open to the public, except from 1 April to 15 July, when birds are breeding.
Yes, if surf and dunes are the point. The middle of our homes here sits near Klitmøller, about 18 km north-west of Thisted, on the North Sea side of Thy National Park. Thisted, with about 13,500 people, is the larger town nearby.
No. Thisted sits on Thisted Bredning, part of the Limfjord, not on the open sea. The North Sea beaches are on the west coast, and Klitmøller is about 18 km north-west of the town.
Yes. Klitmøller is called Cold Hawaii and is described as one of Europe's premier windsurfing and kitesurfing places, with the Danish Wave Performance championships held there since the 1990s. Winds are often strong and waves large, so check conditions before going in.
Aalborg, about 86 km east by road, is the nearest with scheduled international flights, and Norwegian flies there from London Gatwick. Thisted Airport, about 15 km from town, has not had daily scheduled flights since 2007.
It is a 55 km strip of coast from Hanstholm to Agger Tange, 244 square kilometres in all, with dune heath, small lakes and conifer plantations. Red deer live in the park, and cranes are among the rare breeding birds on the heaths.
