Hjørring's holiday houses sit on the coast around Lønstrup, not in the inland town, and suit couples and families after cliffs and dunes. Lønstrup is about 15 minutes' drive from Hjørring, so plan on a car, and this stretch of North Sea is cold and exposed.
Hjørring is an inland market town of about 26,000 people, with a pedestrian shopping street, the Metropol shopping centre, the Vendsyssel historical and art museums and a station on the line between Aalborg and Frederikshavn. It is not where these houses are. They sit on the coast, mostly within a couple of kilometres of Lønstrup, an old fishing village strung along one road and known for its craft studios and galleries. South of it, Lønstrup Klint is a cliff of ice-age sand and clay that rises to about 90 metres at Rubjerg Knude. Most houses sleep around six, most have a fireplace and a good number have a sauna. Evenings are spent at home. Out of season the cliffs and beach are windswept and very quiet.
Old fishing village along one main road, with glassblowers, potters and galleries, close to most of the houses.
Lighthouse on Lønstrup Klint, 23 metres tall, moved 70 metres inland on rails in October 2019 as sand and erosion closed in.
Beach town at the southern end of Lønstrup Klint, with around 500 white bathing huts in summer, about 15 minutes' drive from Lønstrup.
Ferry port for Norway with the Nordsøen Oceanarium, one of Europe's largest aquariums, about 20 minutes from Lønstrup.
Denmark's northernmost town, beside the Grenen headland where two seas meet, about an hour's drive from Lønstrup.
Aalborg Airport is about 45 minutes' drive from Lønstrup, and Norwegian flies there from London Gatwick. SAS also connects through Copenhagen. Trains from Aalborg stop at Hjørring, but with the houses spread along the coast, a car is the practical choice.
July and August are the warmest months and the busiest on this coast. June and September bring long light evenings and fewer people. Autumn and winter gales whip up the sea and blow sand along the cliffs, which is when Rubjerg Knude looks its wildest. Erosion keeps changing this coastline, so stay well back from cliff edges in any season.
Only if you want the coast. Hjørring is an inland market town, and the houses listed under it lie near Lønstrup, about 15 minutes' drive away. You will shop in Hjørring or Lønstrup and drive to most sights.
In practice, yes. Regional buses do reach villages and beaches across the area, but the houses are spread along the coast, and Hirtshals, Løkken and Skagen are all trips by road.
Go carefully. This is open North Sea, cold and exposed to the wind, and the cliffs here are eroding. The coast near Lønstrup suits walking more than swimming, and Løkken has lifeguards in summer if you want a guarded beach.
Aalborg. It lies about 45 km south of Hjørring and roughly 45 minutes' drive from Lønstrup, with Norwegian flights from London Gatwick and SAS links through Copenhagen.
Løkken puts you near a town centre with shops and cafés and a long beach where cars can drive on some stretches. The coast near Lønstrup is quieter, with high cliffs and craft galleries. Pick Løkken for convenience and Lønstrup for scenery.
