About Vir
Vir is a low island of about 22 square kilometres, with its highest point, Bandira, at 112 metres and three villages: Vir, Lozice and Torovi. About 3,000 people live here, and visitors stay longer on average than anywhere else in Croatia. There are no big hotels; accommodation is holiday flats and houses, many close to the sea. Our homes are mostly houses with gardens and two bedrooms, few with pools, clustered within a few kilometres of each other. Jadro is the main beach, pebble over a fine sandy seabed with shallow water. Sapavac in the south is very shallow sand, and Duboka Draga and Crvenka have natural sand between red rocks. The roads are flat enough for easy cycling. Jadro and Zitna have the restaurants, cafés and beach bars.
Is Vir right for you?

When to go to Vir
The usual advice is late May to late September. July and August are the peak, when Jadro, the island's main tourist centre, is at its busiest, while Lozice and Straža stay quieter. UK flights to Zadar are seasonal, and the bura, a cold and gusty wind, is most common in winter.

Vir villa holidays: questions answered
Is Vir good for families?
Yes. Jadro beach has shallow water over a fine sandy seabed, Sapavac is very shallow sand, and most of our homes have gardens. The island is flat, which suits bikes. Teenagers may find little beyond the beach.
Do you need a car in Vir?
Mostly yes. You can cycle around the flat island, but Nin, Zadar and the airport are all on the mainland, across a bridge of about 300 metres, and Zadar is about 25 km away.
Which airport is closest to Vir?
Zadar. Vir is about 25 km from Zadar's old town, and the airport is 8 km from the city. UK flights are seasonal, with Ryanair from Stansted taking about two hours twenty minutes.
Are Vir's beaches sand or pebble?
Both. Jadro and Zitna are mostly pebble with sand underwater, Lozice and Straža are pebble, and Duboka Draga, Crvenka and Sapavac have natural sand. Sapavac, in the south, is very shallow.
Vir or Nin for a villa holiday?
Vir has far more holiday homes and a flat, built-up feel, with beaches all round the island. Nin is a small town on a lagoon islet with sandy beaches and the Holy Cross church, about 15 km away, so many Vir guests visit for the day.
Is Vir busy in August?
Yes, July and August are the peak. Jadro, the biggest tourist centre, is busiest, while Lozice and Straža are quieter. Visitors to Vir stay longer on average than anywhere else in Croatia, so expect families settled in for a week or more.
