About Starigrad-Paklenica
Starigrad-Paklenica is a municipality of about 1,700 people, of whom just over 1,000 live in the village itself. Paklenica has two parallel gorges, Velika and Mala. Velika Paklenica is described as a climbers' Mecca, and a rocky trail runs through it to a mountain lodge about 6 km from the entrance; Mala Paklenica is recommended only for experienced hikers. The Velebit range behind runs about 145 km. The village has older layers too: the Roman settlement of Argyruntum stood on a small island east of the port, now silted, and about 400 tombs were excavated. Homes are scattered along the coast around Starigrad-Paklenica, mostly small and sleeping around five, with no saunas and few gardens. Evenings are quiet.
