Bale is a hilltop town in Istria, about 5 km from the sea, where the roads to Rovinj, Pula and Trieste meet. Most homes here have a private pool, but the water is a drive away, not a walk.
Bale stands 140 metres above sea level and grew up in the 15th century around the medieval castle of the Soardo and Bembo families; early records name it as the Roman settlement Castrum Vallis. The old centre has narrow streets and stone houses, a recently restored Bembo Palace, a town loggia and the parish church of St Julian, whose late 19th-century bell tower dominates the skyline. The centre is under protection. The homes are scattered around the town rather than in one cluster, and many have a sauna as well as a pool. Most sleep around five or six, and few are for large groups. Evenings are quiet, with the old town the main place to stroll.

City at the southern tip of the Istrian peninsula, with one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres and an airport to the north-east.
Pula Airport, north-east of Pula, has flights from the UK on easyJet and Jet2 as well as scheduled Ryanair routes. Bale sits at the junction of the roads to Pula, Rovinj and Trieste, so it suits arriving by car. You will want one, as the sea is about 5 km away and the homes are scattered around the town.
Nearby Pula has hot summers and mild winters, a fair guide to Bale too. Summer is best for the pools and trips to the coast. In winter the bora brings cold, clear weather, and the sirocco can bring rain in summer. The hilltop centre can be walked in any season, but check opening times of restaurants and sights out of season.
