Turracher Höhe suits groups who want a large chalet with a sauna on a high pass, beside a lake at 1,763 metres. The homes sit in one tight cluster. The trade-off is that this is a pass settlement rather than a town, reached by a road with a stretch of about 23 per cent.
The border between Styria and Carinthia runs roughly through the middle of the village and through the Turracher See, and the pass summit sits at 1,795 metres. Across the summit the road runs level for about two kilometres, with two smaller lakes, the Schwarzsee and Grünsee, close by. Nearly all our homes lie within a kilometre of each other. They are mostly big chalets with around four bedrooms that sleep eight or more, most have a sauna, and almost none has a pool or garden. The ski area has five chairlifts, nine T-bar lifts and 38 runs, plus 25 km of cross-country trails. The pass is one of the main ski areas of the Nock Mountains, whose summits are dome-shaped and grassy. This is a pass settlement, not a town, and the lake frequently freezes over in winter.
Carinthian spa and ski town at 1,087 metres, on the B88 that runs east to Reichenau; its ski area has about 185 km of slopes.
Carinthian park of domed, grass-covered summits, set up in 1987 and covering 184 square kilometres.
Styrian town on the Mur at 829 metres, known for Murauer beer, a Renaissance castle and a steam narrow-gauge railway.
Klagenfurt airport has Ryanair flights from London Stansted and is about 61 km away, around an hour by car. Salzburg is just under two hours away. Public transport from Klagenfurt takes over three and a half hours with changes, so a car is needed, and winter driving on the steep pass road calls for care.
Winter is the main season, with the chairlifts, T-bars and cross-country trails all on the pass itself. In summer the lake reaches 18 degrees at most, so swimming is for the hardy, and the draw is walking over the Nock Mountains and the Nockberge park. The lake frequently freezes in winter. Check lift opening dates before booking either side of the core months.
Yes, if you want a house rather than a hotel room. Most of the homes here are chalets for eight or more with a sauna. The ski area has five chairlifts, nine T-bars and 38 runs, which suits groups at mixed levels.
Only if you are hardy. The lake sits at 1,763 metres and reaches at most about 18 degrees in summer, so it is hardly used for bathing. The exception is a hotel beach on the southern shore that uses thermal pumps.
Both. The border between Styria and Carinthia runs roughly through the middle of the village and the lake, and the Carinthian part belongs to the municipality of Reichenau. Our homes are listed under Styria.
Steep. The B95 pass road has a steepest section of about 23 per cent on the Carinthian side today. Historically it reached 34 per cent. Take it slowly and allow extra time in winter.
Walking is the main activity, over the domed, grass-covered summits of the Nock Mountains. The Nockberge National Park lies in the Carinthian part of the range. The pass has three lakes, the Turracher See, Schwarzsee and Grünsee, but the water is too cold for most swimmers.
