Laax suits snowboarders and freestyle skiers who want the Vorab glacier and big terrain parks from a village at about 1,050 metres. Most homes are one-bedroom apartments for four. The trade-off is that the ski lifts start at Laax Murschetg rather than in the village itself.
Laax is a village of around two thousand people where German and Romansh are both widely spoken, and its name means lakes in Romansh. Tourism began here in 1962 with the opening of the Crap Sogn Gion lift. The ski lifts are at Laax Murschetg, and the Galaaxy hub sends two stages up to the Vorab glacier at 3,000 metres. Our homes sit within a couple of kilometres of the village, mostly one-bedroom apartments sleeping four, with saunas and fireplaces in a fair number. A small lake, the Laaxersee, sits in the village itself.

Laax suits skiers who want the lifts close, since they start at Laax Murschetg. Flims sits at 1,081 metres under the Flimserstein rock face, with the Caumasee lake. Both belong to the Weisse Arena, which also takes in Falera, so the same ski area serves either.
Bathing and pedal boats on Lake Laax, walks through the Flimserwald to Lake Cauma, and the Rhine Gorge with its Il Spir viewpoint. The Senda dil Dragun treetop walkway is billed as the longest in the world.
Some do. In the 2000 census about half of residents spoke German and about forty per cent Romansh, with Portuguese third. The name Laax itself comes from the Romansh word for lakes.
Altenrhein is listed as the closest, but Zurich is the fastest, at roughly two hours forty-five by train and bus. Friedrichshafen, Milan Malpensa and Milan Bergamo are all much further, at about five to six and a half hours.
