Flims suits skiers and summer swimmers, with the Laax lifts next door and the Caumasee lake south of the village. The trade-off is summer transport: the free ski buses stop after winter, and only the Post Bus runs along the main road.
Flims is a village of about 2,900 people at 1,081 metres, on a terrace above the Rhine where the river cuts the Ruinaulta gorge. It belongs to the Weisse Arena resort with Laax and Falera. Our homes sit close to the village, with little spread. The Caumasee, south of the village, is spring-fed and has no inflow, because it lies in the debris of a prehistoric rockslide. Flims-Waldhaus is where tourism began, and most of its hotels were built either side of 1900. The Conn area gives a view over the gorge, which people raft and canoe. Between October and March, fog that covers much of Switzerland often stays below Flims, so it can be warmer than the lowlands. The visitor information office is closed from mid-October to mid-December.
A neighbouring municipality, with the ski lifts at Laax Murschetg. Tourism there took off after Crap Sogn Gion opened in 1962.
A swimming lake south of Flims, known for its blue, spring-fed water and bathing facilities built by the Park Hotel.
The Rhine Gorge below Flims, popular for rafting and canoeing, with a viewing area at Conn.
Reputedly the oldest town in Switzerland. A Post Bus runs to Flims from just above the main railway station.
Zurich Airport is the nearest, about an hour and forty minutes by road. By public transport, take the train to Chur, then the Post Bus line 81 to Flims, around two and a half hours in all. A car helps in summer, when the free winter ski buses are not running.
Winter means skiing: the ski area runs to about 235 km, rising to a glacier at 3,018 metres, and free resort buses run in the village. In summer the village moves to the main street and the Caumasee. August is the wettest month, at around 128 mm, and October the driest.
Yes. The Caumasee is a spring-fed lake south of Flims known for its blue water and for swimming. It has no tributaries, as it sits in the debris of the prehistoric Flims Rockslide, and the Park Hotel built bathing facilities there.
Both sit in the same Weisse Arena ski area. The ski lifts are at Laax Murschetg, while Flims has a base station of its own and the Caumasee, so the choice is mainly about the village you prefer.
In summer, a car helps. The free Alpenarena ski buses run around Flims in winter but stop in summer, when the Post Bus on the main road is the only option. Electric bikes can be rented at the Flims base station.
Often, yes. From October to March, the fog that covers much of Switzerland normally does not reach Flims, and temperatures are often inverted, so it can be warmer than the lower areas below the terrace.
Yes. Flims lies above the Ruinaulta, the Rhine gorge, which is a popular rafting and canoeing area. The Conn area gives a view over the gorge from above.
