Vicosoprano suits walkers who want an Italian-speaking village with medieval towers in the Val Bregaglia. It has a dairy, bakery and butcher, and buses run to St. Moritz and towards Chiavenna. Getting here from Zurich means trains to St. Moritz and a bus over the Maloja, so it is a long transfer.
Vicosoprano, at 1,067 metres, is the largest village in the Val Bregaglia and was once the valley's main one, seat of its high court and its transport cooperative. Since 2010 it has been part of the municipality of Bregaglia. Most residents speak Italian, often the local Lombard dialect. The old core keeps the 13th-century Senvelen round tower with its pillory, the six-storey Salis tower and a medieval bridge over the Maira. The homes are in and close to the village. A dairy, a bakery, a butcher and a grocery cover self-catering, and evenings are very quiet.
End point of the Sentiero Panoramico high route from Casaccia, and the origin village of the Salis family, whose Casa Battista is now a hotel.
The Bregaglia village the Giacometti family of artists came from, including Giovanni, Alberto and Diego Giacometti.
A cable car climbs from Pranzaira to the Albigna reservoir, the start of routes to the Albigna hut and over to the Forno valley.

Most travellers fly to Zurich. Trains run via Landquart to St. Moritz on the Rhaetian Railway, and the bus from St. Moritz over the Maloja towards Chiavenna stops in Vicosoprano. Drivers come via Thusis and the Julier and Maloja passes. Postbuses link the valley villages, so a car is optional.
Italian. Most residents speak Italian, many using the local Lombard dialect, with small German and Romansh minorities. Bregaglia is also unusual as an Italian-speaking Swiss municipality where most people are Protestant.
Without difficulty. Take the train to St. Moritz via Landquart, then the bus that runs over the Maloja towards Chiavenna, which stops in the village. Postbuses also link Vicosoprano with the surrounding Bregaglia villages.
The Senvelen round tower dates from the 13th century and keeps its pillory, the Salis tower rises six storeys, and the Baroque church of S. Trinità was built without a bell tower. A medieval bridge crosses the Maira.
Very. The Sentiero Panoramico high route runs from Casaccia to Soglio, and a cable car from Pranzaira climbs to the Albigna reservoir for the Albigna hut and the pass to the Forno valley and Maloja. The Septimer Pass path starts at Casaccia.
