Santa Maria Val Müstair is a small Romansh-speaking village in Graubünden, in the same valley as the Müstair convent. It suits quiet mountain stays and sightseeing built around the convent's frescoes. Journeys are long: Zurich airport is nearly three hours by car and about five and a half by train and bus.
Santa Maria Val Müstair is a village of a few hundred people at roughly 1,375 metres on the Umbrail pass road, in the Val Müstair valley that borders the Engadine. Most residents spoke Romansh at the 2000 census. It merged into the Val Müstair municipality in 2009 and was called Santa Maria im Münstertal until 1995. From Italy, the way in is through the Vinschgau. The homes sit in a loose cluster around the village. Müstair, the lowest and largest village in the valley and the easternmost in Switzerland, is the main sight, with a Carolingian convent whose frescoes date from around 800. Check what is open before you arrive.

Zurich airport is the main gateway: about 2 hours 50 minutes by car, or about 5 hours 30 minutes by train to Landquart, Klosters and Zernez, then bus 811. A car is much easier, since Val Müstair is far from motorways and mainline stations.
Santa Maria lies at around 1,375 metres, so it is a mountain village. The valley is reached over the Ofen Pass from Zernez, or from Italy through the Vinschgau, so check road and bus conditions before travelling in the colder months. Opening times at the convent and local restaurants can vary by season, so check before you go.
