Madulain suits couples and families wanting a tiny, quiet Upper Engadine village on the Inn, about 15 minutes from St. Moritz. It has its own station and a castle ruin on the hill above. Shops and nightlife are thin, so you will head to bigger neighbours for both.
Madulain is the smallest municipality in the Upper Engadine, a village of a little over 200 people at about 1,684 metres on the Inn, between La Punt Chamues-ch and Zuoz. It is a tightly packed village built around a central square, with traditional Engadine houses; German is now the most common language and Romansh the second. On a hill to the west stand the ruins of Guardaval Castle, built around 1250 for the Bishop of Chur to collect tolls on the Albula Pass road. The homes sit close together in the village. Most sleep around four, a few take large groups, and some have a sauna or fireplace; check each listing.
The 13th-century castle ruin on a hill west of Madulain, reached on a marked trail from the station; the largest castle complex in the Upper Engadine.

Winter brings the Madulain ice path and the toboggan run at Alp E-scha Dadour. Summer is for hiking, mountain biking and inline skating, and the trail up to the Guardaval ruins makes a short outing from the station.
Yes. Madulain station sits on the Bever to Scuol-Tarasp railway, with regular trains to St. Moritz, Pontresina, Landquart and Scuol-Tarasp. That makes it a practical base for car-free days across the Engadine, though you should check the timetable for evenings.
It holds a family-friendly label, and the village offers a winter ice path, a toboggan run at Alp E-scha Dadour and summer inline skating and biking routes. It is very small, so plan trips out for shops and bigger attractions.
