Fuldera suits couples and small families wanting a quiet Romansh-speaking village high in the Val Müstair, over the Ofen Pass from Zernez. It sits at 1,638 metres inside a UNESCO biosphere reserve. With only about 120 residents, expect very little open in the evening.
Fuldera is a village of about 120 people at 1,638 metres in the Val Müstair, on the right side of the Rombach. It comes in two parts, the larger Fuldera-Dora and the smaller Fuldera-Daint, and has belonged to the municipality of Val Müstair since 2009. The Reformed church in the middle of the village, rebuilt in its present form in 1708, has an onion-domed tower. Most people speak Romansh in its Vallader form. Around it lie the meadows of a valley where most farmers work entirely organically. The homes are in and around the village, mostly sleeping about four.
The Convent of St John, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a Carolingian monastery, still lived in, with frescoes painted around the year 800.
The neighbouring village has a public ice rink in winter and is the starting point for guided snowshoe hikes.
On the other side of the Ofen Pass, far less tamed than the meadows and villages of the Val Müstair, and part of the same biosphere reserve.
From the rest of Switzerland you reach the Val Müstair only via Zernez and over the Ofen Pass; from Zurich the route runs through Landquart and the Vereina tunnel. You can also come in from Italy via Merano and the Vinschgau. A car is the practical choice.
Winter is the quiet season for tobogganing and stargazing at Santa Maria, guided snowshoe hikes from Tschierv and ice rinks at Tschierv and Müstair, with the Swiss Snow Kids Village at Minschuns for young skiers. The convent at Müstair makes a good trip on a grey day in any season.
Romansh, mainly. About three quarters of residents named it as their language in 2000, in the Vallader dialect, and German is the other main language in the village.
For a quiet one, yes. The valley offers tobogganing and stargazing at Santa Maria, guided snowshoe hikes from Tschierv and winter wildlife watching, with ice rinks at Müstair and Tschierv. Young skiers can use the Swiss Snow Kids Village at Minschuns.
Not quite. Fuldera is in the Val Müstair, on the far side of the Ofen Pass from the park, but the valley and the park together form Switzerland's first UNESCO high Alpine biosphere reserve.
