Unterterzen suits winter and summer stays on the south shore of the Walensee, with the gondola up to Flumserberg beside the railway station. It has no private pools, so this is a base for lake, mountain and sauna days rather than pool days.
Unterterzen is a village on the southern shore of the Walensee, alongside Mols, Murg and Mühlehorn, with a station on the Ziegelbrücke to Sargans railway line. Across the water the seven peaks of the Churfirsten rise steeply from the lake. The cable car to Flumserberg starts next to the station and calls at Oberterzen on the way up to the resort terrace. The homes sit in one tight group in the village and none has a private pool. Nearly half have a sauna and most have a fireplace, which suits cold evenings, while few have a garden. Check restaurant opening times before an off-season visit.
Resort villages between 1,160 and 1,344 metres on a terrace overlooking the Walensee, about 20 minutes up by gondola from Unterterzen.
Village on the north shore with no road; you arrive by boat from Murg or on foot, and palms and vines grow there.
At the eastern end of the Walensee, and one starting point for the hiking trail to the roadless village of Quinten.
At the western end of the Walensee, where the other end of the hiking trail to Quinten begins.
Zurich airport is about 78 km away, around an hour by car. By rail, change at Ziegelbrücke for Unterterzen station, about an hour and a half in all. The gondola to Flumserberg leaves from beside the station, so a car is not needed for the lifts.
Winter brings skiing on the Flumserberg terrace, reached by the gondola, and the fireplaces and saunas in many homes come into their own. In summer the same hills are used for hiking and biking, with a summer toboggan run called Floomzer, and the lake is the main draw.
Yes. The valley station of the cable car to Flumserberg is next to Unterterzen railway station, cabins leave every few minutes, and the ride takes about 20 minutes with a stop at Oberterzen.
