About Meiringen
Meiringen sits at about 595 m on the upper Aare, upstream of Lake Brienz, and has around 4,700 residents. It was historically the capital of the Haslital. The town claims the meringue and has a Sherlock Holmes Museum in its former English church. Our homes are close together, mostly with a garden. A good number have a sauna and few have a pool, and they mostly sleep around five, with some for large groups. The Aare Gorge has wooden walkways above the water. The Brünig line brings an hourly train between Interlaken and Lucerne, and one of the three main Swiss Air Force bases is here. The town itself is relaxed and easy to stroll, with a Sherlock Holmes statue to find.

Meiringen villa holidays: questions answered
Is Meiringen good for families?
Yes. The Hasliberg ski area is described as family-friendly, with a children's area, toboggan runs and winter walking trails. In summer there are gorge walks, a funicular to the falls and the Trift suspension bridge.
What is the Sherlock Holmes link in Meiringen?
The Reichenbach Falls are where Conan Doyle had Holmes fight Moriarty, and a marked spot on the path shows where he fell. Meiringen has a Sherlock Holmes Museum, opened in 1991 in a former English church, with a recreation of the 221B sitting room.
Did Meiringen invent meringue?
Meiringen claims meringue was first created here, so ordering one in town is almost expected. Treat it as local tradition rather than settled history.
When does the Reichenbach Falls funicular near Meiringen run?
From May to October. The 7-minute ride climbs 244 m, and the falls are strongest in May and June. Take the B 174 bus from the station to Klinik Reichenbach, as parking is limited.
Is Meiringen good in winter?
Yes for a quiet base. Hasliberg, with about 60 km of slopes, is the family-friendly ski area, and the valley itself averages only about a metre of snow a year.
