Meiringen is a Haslital town with the Aare Gorge, the Reichenbach Falls and the Hasliberg family ski area close by. It suits sightseeing stays with a garden, but very few homes have a pool and the falls funicular runs only from May to October.
Meiringen sits at about 595 m on the upper Aare, upstream of Lake Brienz, and has around 4,700 residents. It was historically the capital of the Haslital. The town claims the meringue and has a Sherlock Holmes Museum in its former English church. Our homes are close together, mostly with a garden. A good number have a sauna and few have a pool, and they mostly sleep around five, with some for large groups. The Aare Gorge has wooden walkways above the water. The Brünig line brings an hourly train between Interlaken and Lucerne, and one of the three main Swiss Air Force bases is here. The town itself is relaxed and easy to stroll, with a Sherlock Holmes statue to find.
About 120 m high, reached by a historic funicular from Meiringen, with a path to the Sherlock Holmes fall site.
A deep gorge with wooden walkways above the water, where you can feel the force of the river.
The valley's family-friendly ski area with about 60 km of slopes and a children's area.
A high pass with reservoirs and granite scenery, reached from Meiringen by postbus.
The lake downstream of Meiringen, nearby, with the Ballenberg open-air museum a short trip away.
Zurich airport is about 1 hour 25 minutes away by car. By train it takes around 3 hours with a change at Lucerne, on the Brünig line that runs hourly to Meiringen. The B 174 bus runs to the falls funicular, but a car helps for the passes.
The Reichenbach funicular runs from May to October, and the falls are strongest in May and June from snowmelt. Summer suits gorges, glacier walks and the Trift suspension bridge. In winter, Hasliberg is family-friendly, with winter walking trails and toboggan runs. Only about a metre of snow falls in the valley itself in a typical year.
Yes. The Hasliberg ski area is described as family-friendly, with a children's area, toboggan runs and winter walking trails. In summer there are gorge walks, a funicular to the falls and the Trift suspension bridge.
The Reichenbach Falls are where Conan Doyle had Holmes fight Moriarty, and a marked spot on the path shows where he fell. Meiringen has a Sherlock Holmes Museum, opened in 1991 in a former English church, with a recreation of the 221B sitting room.
Meiringen claims meringue was first created here, so ordering one in town is almost expected. Treat it as local tradition rather than settled history.
From May to October. The 7-minute ride climbs 244 m, and the falls are strongest in May and June. Take the B 174 bus from the station to Klinik Reichenbach, as parking is limited.
Yes for a quiet base. Hasliberg, with about 60 km of slopes, is the family-friendly ski area, and the valley itself averages only about a metre of snow a year.
