Oropesa del Mar suits couples and small families after a pool home near white-sand beaches on the Costa del Azahar. Its growth came with the Marina d'Or resort complex, so do not expect a village; the small old quarter sits on a hill above.
Oropesa del Mar is a municipality of about 12,600 people in Castellón province, 23 km from the city of Castellón. Its homes are mostly small houses and apartments for around four, nearly all with a pool, spread over a few kilometres around the town. The main beach is Playa de la Concha, which holds a Blue Flag, with white-sand Les Amplaries and Morro de Gos along the coast and the rocky, pine-backed coves of La Renegà, which stay relatively uncrowded. The old quarter climbs a hill 35 m above the sea on narrow, steep medieval streets, under a castle of Muslim origin, and the 16th-century Torre del Rey was built against pirate raids. The Marina d'Or complex drove the town's growth. Benicàssim is a walk or bike ride away along the Via Verde.

An 18.8 km range right on the coast, protected as a natural park, with Pico Campanelles at 573 m.
Castellón airport is about 30 km away, with Ryanair from Stansted. Valencia airport, about 95 km away, has Ryanair from Stansted, easyJet, Vueling and Wizz Air from Gatwick and British Airways from Heathrow. The homes are spread out around the town, so a car is the practical choice.
Nearby Castellón has hot, dry, muggy summers with July and August highs around 30 C. Autumn is the wettest season, with the heaviest rain in September and October. Oropesa's festival calendar includes Sant Joan bonfires on 23 and 24 June, San Jaime around 25 July and the Virgen de la Paciencia in October. Benicàssim also hosts well-known music festivals.
Yes, for a beach week. Playa de la Concha holds a Blue Flag, nearly all homes have a pool, and the Via Verde, an old railway line, takes walkers and cyclists to Benicàssim. Evenings centre on the resort rather than an old village.
