Benicàssim is a good fit for families after six kilometres of sandy beach joined by one promenade, with hills behind for walks. Homes here are mostly mid-sized, and a garden is more common than a pool; check each listing for air conditioning. The main beaches get very busy, and the town hosts music festivals including the FIB.
Benicàssim is a beach resort of about 20,000 people, 13 km north of Castellón de la Plana. Its beaches, among them L'Almadrava, Torre de San Vicent and Voramar, run for about six kilometres and are linked by one promenade. Voramar is known for the villas along its seafront, and modernist and colonial-style holiday villas went up by the beaches from the late 19th century. The historic quarter centres on an 18th-century neoclassical parish church. Behind the town rises the Desert de les Palmes, a protected range rather than a desert, which shelters Benicàssim from the north wind and tops out at Mount Bartolo, 729 metres. The homes are close together in town.
Protected hills behind the town with a retreat founded by the Carmelites, walking and cycling routes and, from the top on clear days, views to the Columbretes Islands.
Benicàssim lies 13 km north of this city, an easy trip for a change from the beach and the promenade.
Valencia airport is about an hour by car, 58 minutes for roughly 57 miles. Trains run from Valencia's Estació del Nord to Benicàssim, but getting from the airport to that station adds time. A car is easiest if you want the hills.
It depends on what you want nearby. L'Almadrava is around 600 metres long and 50 metres wide, with sunbed hire, toilets and showers, but it gets very busy. Voramar is the one lined with old seafront villas.
Yes. Benicàssim has about six kilometres of sandy beaches, all joined by the seafront promenade, so you can walk the length of the town along the shore.
The FIB, or Festival Internacional de Benicàssim, and Rototom Sunsplash both take place here. The town also hosts the Francisco Tárrega guitar competition, which has run since 1967. Check festival dates before booking a quiet week.
