About Madeira/Funchal
Funchal is Madeira's capital and largest city, home to about 105,000 people, set in an amphitheatre-shaped valley with slopes rising to 1,200 m. The homes are spread across the city and its hillsides, and many have a private pool. In town you get the Old Town around Rua de Santa Maria, and the Mercado dos Lavradores, which opened in 1940 and sells fruit, vegetables, flowers and fish. A cable car climbs to Monte, with a second line on to the Botanical Gardens. The beach people travel for is the 9 km one on Porto Santo, a separate island. Winter is wetter but mild.

Madeira/Funchal villa holidays: questions answered
Where is the beach near Funchal?
The long beach, about 9 km, is on Porto Santo, a separate island. Funchal itself is better planned around its gardens, market and hillsides, with a villa pool for swimming.
Is Funchal hilly?
Very. The city sits in a valley whose slopes reach 1,200 m, and many villas are up the hillsides. Walking back from the harbour is uphill, so a car, taxis or the cable car matter.
Is Funchal good in winter?
Yes, for mild weather rather than swimming. Highs run 20 to 25 C from October to April, though winters are wetter and December is the wettest month. The sea sits between 18 and 24 C through the year.
What is the Monte toboggan in Funchal?
Toboggan drivers at Monte race tourists down to the centre of Funchal. You reach Monte by cable car from the lower city, and a second line runs on to the Botanical Gardens.
Funchal or Câmara de Lobos?
Funchal has the market, gardens and cable car; Câmara de Lobos is the smaller town on its western side, with a sheltered harbour and the Cabo Girão cliff close by. The two share a border, so either works as a base for both.
