About Campanário
Campanário is a parish of more than thirty localities rather than a single village centre, with a listed elevation of about 650 metres. Roughly a third of the working population farms, with potatoes, vineyards, bananas and oranges. The name comes from a tall islet near Cabo Girão that looked like a bell tower to early explorers. Fajã dos Padres is a pebble beach with turquoise water, reached only by cable car or boat, and Calhau da Lapa is a seaside spot sheltered by cliffs, reached by a steep path or by boat. The homes are scattered over a few kilometres, mostly small, and few have a pool.
