Moncarapacho is a former civil parish of about 75 square kilometres in the municipality of Olhão, merged in 2013 into the parish of Moncarapacho e Fuseta. The homes are spread over a few kilometres rather than clustered. Olhão, a fishing port and tourist centre known for canned sardines, has a coastal strip inside the Ria Formosa Natural Park, one of the more important wetlands in Europe. The homes are small: many sleep two with one bedroom, nearly all have air conditioning, most a private pool and many a garden, while a few sleep up to nine. For an evening out, Faro, the regional capital, is a short drive away. The Culatra ferry from Olhão runs year-round.
