Ruinen (Dwingelderveld)
Most of our Drenthe houses are in Ruinen, a village on the southern edge of Dwingelderveld National Park, one of the largest wet heaths in western Europe. Paths lead from the village onto open heath, fens and pine woods, with a flock of sheep and its shepherd often out grazing. Meppel and Hoogeveen, the nearest towns for big shops, are each around 15 minutes away. Schiphol is about an hour and three quarters by car.
Best for: Families and cyclists who want heath and forest from the door
Not for you if: You want nightlife or a big choice of restaurants: Ruinen is a village.
