Villas in Zuid-Holland

Noordwijk, Katwijk and Scheveningen suit beach holidays, Noordwijkerhout puts you among the bulb fields, and Hellevoetsluis is quieter. Most of our houses are in Noordwijk, half an hour from Schiphol. This is the busiest part of the country, so expect traffic and neighbours rather than empty dunes, but Leiden, The Hague and Delft are all close.

Nearest airports: Amsterdam Schiphol, around an hour and a quarter from London, is about 30 minutes from Noordwijk. Rotterdam The Hague Airport has flights from London City and is closer for Hellevoetsluis. Eurostar stops at Rotterdam. By car, Stena sails Harwich to Hook of Holland in about seven hours, and P&O runs an overnight ferry from Hull to Rotterdam Europoort.

Where to stay in Zuid-Holland

Noordwijk (the bulb coast)

More than half of our Zuid-Holland houses are here. Noordwijk aan Zee has a long sandy beach with seasonal beach pavilions and a seafront boulevard, and the old village of Noordwijk-Binnen sits a short cycle inland. Dune paths run north and south along the coast. Keukenhof is about 15 minutes by car, Leiden around 20, and Schiphol roughly half an hour.

Best for: Families who want a proper beach resort with shops and cafes

Not for you if: You want a quiet beach: on warm summer weekends Noordwijk fills with day visitors.

Noordwijkerhout and De Zilk (among the bulb fields)

These villages sit in the middle of the bulb-growing country, where the fields turn into strips of colour from late March into May. Keukenhof, at Lisse, is about ten minutes away. To the north lie the Amsterdam water-supply dunes, a large reserve with fallow deer and marked walks. Langevelderslag, the nearest beach, has a car park and a couple of pavilions. Schiphol is around 25 minutes.

Best for: Spring visitors who want Keukenhof and the tulip fields close by

Not for you if: You want to walk to the sea: the beach is a short drive or a longer bike ride away.

Katwijk and Wassenaar

Katwijk aan Zee has a wide beach, a seafront lined with low houses and the white church, the Witte Kerk, at one end. The Old Rhine meets the sea here through a set of sluices. Wassenaar, further south, is a wealthy village near the Meijendel dunes and the Duinrell theme park, popular with Dutch families. Leiden is around 15 minutes from both.

Best for: Beach days with Leiden's museums and canals a short ride away

Not for you if: You want a lively resort: Katwijk is a calmer, more local seaside town.

The Hague and Scheveningen

The Hague is the seat of government and home to the Mauritshuis, where Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring hangs, and to the Peace Palace. Trams run out to Scheveningen, the country's best-known seaside resort, with a pier and a harbour full of fish restaurants. Kijkduin, to the south, is quieter. Delft is about 15 minutes by tram or train, and Rotterdam around half an hour.

Best for: City breaks with museums, trams and a beach in the same week

Not for you if: You want a garden and easy parking: these are mostly town houses and flats with paid street parking.

Hellevoetsluis (Voorne)

Hellevoetsluis is an old naval town with ramparts, a dry dock and a busy marina on the Haringvliet estuary. The North Sea beaches at Rockanje and Oostvoorne, with dunes and woods behind them, are about 15 minutes by car. Rotterdam is around 40 minutes. The ferry port at Hook of Holland is roughly half an hour away, which suits anyone driving from England.

Best for: Sailors and families who want space within reach of Rotterdam

Not for you if: You want the sea at the end of the street: Hellevoetsluis faces the Haringvliet, not open water.

Goedereede, Herkingen and Zuid-Beijerland (the islands)

Goedereede is a tiny walled harbour town on Goeree-Overflakkee, a few minutes from the broad beach at Ouddorp and the Brouwersdam, a dam that draws kitesurfers. Herkingen is a small village with a marina on the Grevelingen, a saltwater lake good for sailing and diving. Zuid-Beijerland sits in the farmland of the Hoeksche Waard. Rotterdam is 30 minutes to an hour away.

Best for: Quiet stays near Ouddorp beach and the Grevelingen lake

Not for you if: You want a choice of houses: we have only a handful here.

When to go to Zuid-Holland

Spring is the busiest time for the bulb coast. Keukenhof opens only from mid-March to mid-May (19 March to 10 May in 2026), and the fields usually peak in mid-April, so Noordwijk and Noordwijkerhout book up early. July and August bring Dutch and German school holidays and full beaches on hot weekends. The North Sea stays cool and the wind blows most days. June and September are calmer. In winter many beach pavilions stay open, and the cities carry on as normal.
