Torre Suda suits a family or couple after a quiet Ionian base in Salento, with low rocks for snorkelling and sand at Mancaversa. Choice is small, with only a handful of homes, and it is a summer resort first.
Torre Suda is the seaside hamlet of Racale, on the Ionian side of southern Salento. Its round 16th-century watchtower, 13.5 metres tall, was built against Turkish raids. The shore right here is low rock rather than beach: Spiaggia delle Monache is a rocky cove good for snorkelling, while the fine sand of Punta della Suina and the shallow water at Mancaversa are close by. In the village stand early 20th-century Moorish-style houses built by Racale's wealthier families. The homes sleep five or six, all with a garden. It is busiest in summer, and the village festivals include a fish sagra.

A sandy beach on this stretch of coast, with shallow water for paddling.
A protected regional park running along this part of the Ionian coast.
Brindisi is the airport to use, around 1 hour 15 minutes by car. Lecce is about 45 minutes away. Hire a car: by public transport the trip from Brindisi airport takes nearly three hours.
Rocky right in the village, with low cliffs and coves such as Spiaggia delle Monache, which is good for snorkelling. For sand, head to Punta della Suina or Mancaversa, where the water is shallow.
