Manduria is a wine town of around 31,000 people, 35 km east of Taranto, known for Primitivo and its ancient Messapic walls. Homes are mostly small, air-conditioned and rarely have a pool. The sea is at Marina di Manduria and the town's coastal localities, so beach days need a drive.
Manduria is a working town rather than a resort. It was a Messapic stronghold against Taranto, and remains of its ancient defences survive, including a double line of stone walls built without mortar. Landmarks include the Fonte Pliniano, a well with an almond tree growing from its centre, the Imperiali-Filotico palace and a museum of Primitivo wine. Vineyards surround the town. San Pietro in Bevagna and Torre Colimena are among its outlying localities. The homes are spread around the town, nearly all with a garden and air conditioning.
Port city 35 km west of Manduria, with the MArTA archaeological museum and an old town of underground sites, churches and cloisters.
Seaside locality of Manduria on the coast route from Taranto, where the shore runs from sandy dunes to low rocks and small coves.
Wetland linked to the sea by a canal, near Marina di Manduria, once guarded by a fortified building that stored its salt.
Brindisi Airport is about 47 minutes from Manduria by car, around 46 km. Public transport means buses or a train and bus with changes, starting away from the airport, so a hire car is the practical choice. Taranto is 35 km west.
Primitivo wine. The local Primitivo di Manduria DOC is a full-bodied red made from Primitivo grapes, and the town has a museum devoted to Primitivo and the history of winemaking.
Not in the town itself. The coast is at Marina di Manduria and San Pietro in Bevagna, where the shore runs from sandy dunes to rocky coves. Beach days mean a drive from the homes around Manduria.
The Messapic walls, a double line of stone laid without mortar, about 1,200 rock-cut tombs and the Fonte Pliniano well with its almond tree. There are also the Imperiali-Filotico palace and a surprising number of churches.
About 47 minutes by car, around 46 km. Buses and trains involve changes and start away from the terminal, so renting a car at the airport makes the journey far simpler.
