Sassofortino suits families and walkers who want a stone hill village with oak and chestnut woods, about 35 minutes from Grosseto. It sits at 560 metres on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Colline Metallifere. The village is small and buses are rare, so plan to drive for most meals out and the beach.
Sassofortino is a small medieval village of a few hundred people, a hamlet of Roccastrada about 8 km from the main town. It stands on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Colline Metallifere, and the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, rebuilt in neo-Gothic style in the 19th century, dominates the skyline. Look at the doorways: many have portals carved in rhyolite with figurative motifs. The Castle of Sassoforte, an 11th-century fortress, is now in ruins, and the woods of the Roccastrada area are oak, Turkey oak and chestnut. Our homes are in and just around the village, and most have a garden and a fireplace.
A few kilometres away on a spur of Monte Sassoforte, built of trachyte under towering rhyolite boulders, with views to the sea and the Tuscan Archipelago.
The main town, on a plug of igneous rock at 475 metres, with the 13th-century church of San Niccolò and views towards Monte Amiata.
A village grown up around an Aldobrandeschi citadel, a maze of narrow alleys cut into rock above the Maremma plain.
Fly to Rome Fiumicino; the drive is about 205 km and takes around two and a half hours. From Grosseto it is about 35 minutes by car, and Autolinee Toscane buses run from Grosseto three times a day. A car is close to essential.
Yes. The Roccastrada Trekking route covers 120 km of these hills and is open to walkers, riders and mountain bikers, and hiking routes lead to the Farma and La Pietra nature reserves.
Late October into early November. The village holds its Chestnut Festival every year at that time, celebrating autumn food.
About 33 km, or roughly 35 minutes by car. Buses run from Grosseto three times a day and take just under an hour.
Tortelli maremmani, acquacotta and wild boar with olives are the dishes of the Roccastrada area, and the Monteregio wine trail passes through the main town.
