Prata suits walkers and families who want a hill village in the Colline Metallifere, with private pools at most homes. It sits inland at about 620 metres, so the sea, shops and restaurants all mean a drive.
Prata is a village of a few hundred people belonging to Massa Marittima, about 12 km from that town, in the Colline Metallifere of Grosseto province. It sits on a hill at around 620 metres at the foot of two summits, Poggio della Croce and the higher Poggione. The old centre shows its castle past: a Sienese cassero built into houses, the remains of a wall tower and the Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta with a bell tower from the 14th or 15th century. The homes are grouped just outside the village. Most have a garden and a private pool, though check each listing, and they mostly sleep four, with the odd one taking a larger group.

A small oratory in the woods about 1 km from Prata, the focus of the village festival held every Whit Monday.
Fly to Pisa. The drive from Pisa airport to Massa Marittima takes around one and a half hours, and Prata is a further 12 km into the hills. Public transport via Follonica takes over three hours to Massa Marittima, so hire a car.
Summer is the season for the pools and for the Corsa della Ruzzola, held every August. Whit Monday brings the festival at the Fonte Vecchia oratory, and spring and autumn are the gentler months for walking the hills around the village.
It is a cheese race held every August. The village districts of Pianello, Terrarossa and Palazzo compete by rolling wheels of well-aged cheese, and the prize banner is painted each year by a local artist.
Yes. Prata is part of the Massa Marittima municipality and lies about 12 km from the town, so it is an easy drive for shopping, eating out and sightseeing.
Most do, along with a garden, though air conditioning is rare, so check each listing if you are coming in high summer.
Plenty for a village. Look for the Sienese cassero built into houses in the old centre, the remains of a castle wall tower and the Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta, recorded since the 11th century.
