Pari suits larger groups who want a pool and a hilltop village base near the Ombrone, with the Petriolo baths a few kilometres off. Most homes here sleep eight or more and most have a private pool. Pari itself has only a couple of hundred residents, so expect to drive for supplies and meals out.
Pari is a hamlet of Civitella Paganico in the province of Grosseto, built on the top of a hill in the Ombrone valley, near the Ombrone and Farma rivers. The lanes of the old centre follow the contours of the hill in a rough circle, and the Palazzo di Giustizia, once the court and prison, stands on the square at the highest point. San Biagio, the parish church, holds 17th-century paintings, among them work from the school of Domenico Beccafumi, and remains of the old walls survive in the bases of later buildings. The homes are scattered around Pari, and nights are very quiet.
Woodland thermal baths a few kilometres from Pari, used since Roman times; the baths themselves date back to 1230.
Separate village on the slopes of the Pari hill, with a 15th-century church of San Donato and a bishop's palace built in 1573.
Hilltop seat of the comune about 13 km from Pari, among cypress and olive trees, with views over the Maremma plain.
Village where the Ombrone comes down from the hills toward the plain, with its old town gates and frescoes in the church of San Michele Arcangelo.
Florence airport is about 90 km from Pari and Pisa about 100 km, so most UK visitors fly to one of them and hire a car. From Grosseto the drive takes around 35 minutes. A bus from Grosseto stops at the Casale di Pari junction, but you need a car to reach the homes.
Summer is when the pools earn their keep. Autumn is the season of new wine and oil, which Civitella Marittima celebrates with the Festa del Buco Unto on the second weekend of November. Winter is very quiet in a hamlet this small, so check what is open before an off-season stay.

A few kilometres. The Bagni di Petriolo are thermal baths set in woodland that have been used since Roman times, and they make the easiest short outing from a house near Pari.
A little. San Biagio has paintings from Beccafumi's school, and the hilltop square holds the old Palazzo di Giustizia. Pari is also remembered for its villagers hiding about twenty interned Jewish refugees in the scrub from 1943 until the end of the war.
They are two separate hamlets of Civitella Paganico. Pari crowns the hill, while Casale di Pari sits on its slopes at around 480 metres, with its own church, bishop's palace and old well in the square.
