Montieri suits groups who want a fireplace and chestnut woods, inland among the trails of the Colline Metallifere. Most of our homes are near Gerfalco, a walled hamlet in the Cornate e Fosini reserve. Public transport needs at least two changes, so this is driving country.
Montieri is a hill village at about 700 metres, about 40 km north of Grosseto, on a slope covered in chestnut forest. Its name comes from Mons aeris, the bronze mountain, and it was an important mining centre between the 11th and 14th centuries. Three towers of the old walls survive, along with 14th-century tower houses and the Buca delle Fate, a medieval tunnel through the rock. Most of our homes are up near Gerfalco, a hamlet of Montieri about 7 km away at 774 metres, whose medieval layout is largely intact and whose walls date from the 12th century. Homes here are roomy, many sleeping seven or more, and nearly all have a fireplace.
The nature reserve that takes in Gerfalco; the Cornate, a rocky mountain with an almost lunar look, is close by.
Another hamlet of Montieri, known for its mining past and the Roste, great stacks of red slag.
The third of Montieri's hamlets, picked out alongside Gerfalco as a village well worth visiting.
Fly to Pisa or Florence. From Florence the drive is about 59 miles and takes around an hour and a half; from Pisa airport it is closer to two hours. Public transport needs at least two changes, so you need a car.
Very. The village is on trails through the Colline Metallifere park, popular with hikers, and Gerfalco lies inside the Cornate e Fosini reserve. Chestnut woods cover the hill the village sits on.
Mostly near Gerfalco, a walled hamlet about 7 km from Montieri village. Its churches include San Biagio, consecrated in 1599, and the former Augustinian convent of Sant'Agostino.
Every three years. Since 1804 the village has renewed its devotion to the Madonna, whose image is brought from Rome to a small sanctuary among the chestnut trees.
Far enough to need a car. Montieri is about 40 km north of Grosseto, and the bus route from the coast at Follonica needs changes via Massa Marittima.
